Neandertals and Moderns Mixed, and It Matters

چکیده
This review uses a calibrated time scale. Suggestions that spikes in C production rendered calibration impossible in the period of the Middleto-Upper Paleolithic transition in Europe1,2 are now superseded, and the different calibration tools available for this time range produce comparable results.3 Here, calibration uses the CalPal software with the SFCP age model for the GISP2 ice core;4–6 uncalibrated results are in years or kiloyears (kyr) “Cbp” and calendar ages are noted “calBP.”

Is human longevity a consequence of cultural change or modern biology?
Increased longevity, expressed as the number of individuals surviving to older adulthood, represents a key way that Upper Paleolithic Europeans differ from earlier European (Neandertal) populations. Here, we address whether longevity increased as a result of cultural/adaptive change in Upper Paleolithic Europe, or whether it was introduced to Europe as a part of modern human biology. We compare...
متن کاملGenes, Fossils, and Culture. An Overview of the Evidence for Neandertal–Modern Human Interaction and Admixture
This paper re-examines current arguments concerning the evidence for Neandertal–modern human interaction and admixture. While most researchers now agree that the ancestry of all present day humans can be traced back to African late Middle Pleistocene populations, at a time when the remainder of Eurasia was inhabited by ‘archaic humans’, most notably the Neandertals, issues that remain to be res...
متن کاملDental maturational sequence and dental tissue proportions in the early Upper Paleolithic child from Abrigo do Lagar Velho, Portugal.
Neandertals differ from recent and terminal Pleistocene human populations in their patterns of dental development, endostructural (internal structure) organization, and relative tissue proportions. Although significant changes in craniofacial and postcranial morphology have been found between the Middle Paleolithic and earlier Upper Paleolithic modern humans of western Eurasia and the terminal ...
متن کاملAdolescent archaics or adult moderns? Le Moustier 1 as a model for estimating the age at death of fragmentary supraorbital fossils in the modern human origins debate.
This study documents and examines selected implications of the adolescent supraorbital anatomy of the Le Moustier 1 Neandertal. Le Moustier's supraorbital morphology conforms to that expected of an adolescent Neandertal but indicates that significant development of the adult Neandertal torus occurs late in ontogeny. As the best preserved adolescent from the Late Pleistocene, Le Moustier 1's ana...
متن کامل[The quarrel between the ancients and the moderns].
The Querelle des Anciens et des Modernes took place at the turn of the eighteenth century The quarrel, or Battle of the Books, as it was referred to in England, was fought on two fronts. First was an argument over philosophical knowledge and the natural sciences: did the ancients know more than the moderns? The second debate involved literature and the arts: had the ancients perfected these are...
